Harbor Pines Honored with Certification as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary from Audubon International.

Creating a sanctuary for indigenous wildlife

Rick Broome, CGCS, Harbor Pines’ award-winning Superintendent, led a six-year certification process leading to Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary status. Harbor Pines is one of just 16 certified sanctuary courses in New Jersey and 475 courses worldwide.

At a news conference held recently at the Club, Joellen Zeb, Program Manager for the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program, announced the award and presented a framed Audubon print depicting American bluebirds, one of the many indigenous species that Harbor Pines is working to protect.

To earn certification, Harbor Pines adopted a comprehensive ecological management program dedicated to habitat preservation; chemical use reduction and safety; water conservation and quality; and community outreach.

The commitment to environmental management will benefit countless varieties of wildlife, both plants and animals. Some were special guests at the news conference! Steven Serwatka, a naturalist from New Jersey Nature, brought examples of local wildlife - volunteers that help him teach school groups and others. Included were a pair of endangered pine snakes and several dramatic birds of prey: a barn owl, a barred owl and a great horned owl.

“ We commend Rick and his team for this exemplary accomplishment," said Mitchell Gurwicz, Owner, Harbor Pines Golf Club. “As developers, we endeavor to enhance the region in which we develop, and this certification is testament to the success of those efforts,” he said.
